BRAIN DAMAGE AFFECTS MENTAL PROCESSES AND BEHAVIOR

IMPACT OF DAMAGE TO THE BRAIN’S PARTS ON ONE’S MENTAL PROCESSES AND BEHAVIOR

Abstract

Brain, the vital component of the central nervous system (CNS), affects a person’s “mental process” which can be expanded to include behavior, thinking, learning, personality, and psychological aspects of the mind. Causes like prolonged hypoxia (shortage of oxygen), poisoning, infection, and neurological illness lead to widespread brain damage whereas physical trauma (traumatic brain injury), stroke, aneurysm or neurological illness lead to localized brain damage. Assessment of extent of brain injury is done by neurological examination, neuroimaging, and neuropsychological assessment techniques like magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI), computed tomography (CT),  positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) etc (“Brain damage,” n.d.). Some of the impacts on the metal processes due to damage of the brains parts like Medulla oblongata, Reticular formation, Cerebellum, Hypothalamus, Amygdale and Hippocampus have been discussed in the article below.

Medulla Oblongata

The medulla oblongata or the medulla, acts as a relay station transmitting the nerve signals between brain and the spinal cord. It controls autonomic functions like breathing, heart rate, swallowing, vomiting, defecation, urination etc. A person suffering from damage to medulla oblongata is considered to be brain dead or in a persistent vegetative state (when the body depends on a ventilator or other supportive equipment). Depending on the nature of the damage, the person may recover or die after this life support is removed. Smith (n.d.)

Reticular Formation

The reticular formation is a comprehensive network of nerve fibers located in the central area of the brain stem. Some of the vital functions performed by it include ability to obtain recuperative sleep, sexual arousal, and the ability to focus on tasks without being easily distracted. Effects of damage to the reticular formation include a constant feeling of fatigue, disturbed sleep pattern and lack of control on wakefulness leading a person to a coma state. It also shows a negative impact on a person’s ability to concentrate, as well as sexual arousal.

Cerebellum

The cerebellum or the little brain is only 10% of the weight of the brain, but contains as many neurons as all the rest of the brain combined. It integrates visual, auditory, vestibular, and somatosensory information received from various channels. This integrated information is modified to promote coordination of voluntary motor movement, balance and equilibrium and muscle tone. Data from clinical and functional studies indicate that the cerebellum also regulates memory processes (Arriada-Mendicoa, Otero-Siliceo & Corona-Vázquez, 1999). Damage to cerebellum leads to multiple effects like:

1)      loss of coordination of motor movement (asynergia)

2)      inability to judge distance and when to stop (dysmetria)

3)      inability to perform rapid alternating movements (adiadochokinesia)

4)      movement tremors (intention tremor)

5)      staggering, wide based walking (ataxic gait)

6)      tendency toward falling

7)      weak muscles (hypotonia)

8)      slurred speech (ataxic dysarthria)

9)      abnormal eye movements (nystagmus) (“Cerebellum”, n.d.)

Hypothalamus

Hypothalamus forms a critical link between autonomic nervous system and endocrine system. The primary function of hypothalamus is homeostasis i.e.: maintaining blood pressure, body temperature, fluid and electrolyte balance, and body weight to a precise value called the set-point. It maintains the four basic biological needs or four F’s of survival: fighting, fleeing, feeding, and reproduction. Damage to hypothalamus influences food intake, weight regulation, thirst, body heat, balance, sleep cycle, response to pain, levels of pleasure, sexual satisfaction, anger and aggressive behavior. Its damaging effect on autonomic nervous system is seen when homeostasis is disturbed.

Amygdale

The amygdale is a part of the limbic system (also referred to as emotional brain) and is found buried within the cerebrum. It is connected to hypothalamus and prefrontal cortex influencing the emotional feelings and related physiological responses to certain situations such as those that warn of pain or other unpleasant consequences or signify the presence of food, water, salt, potential mates or rivals, or infants in need of care. Stimulation of amygdale in humans primarily causes fear and fear-related responses leading to an increased heart rate and pupil dilation. The amygdala of male is a bit bigger than that of the female. Stimulation of the amygdala will produce penile erection, sexual sensation (lust), representations or memories of intercourse and orgasm including its important role in pregnancy in case of women. It also has the ability to respond to emotional stimuli conveyed through sound, or by facial expression. Damage to the amygdale hampers autonomic responses and also leads impairment of the ability to learn new emotions as well as to react appropriately in different situations. Due to this, the patient fails to recognize a dangerous situation.

Hippocampus

The hippocampus, another part of the limbic system, is associated with long-term memory and spatial navigation. In the case of Alzheimer’s disease, hippocampus is one of the first regions of the brain to suffer damage, leading to memory problems. People with extensive hippocampal damage may experience amnesia - the inability to form or retain new memories. The hippocampus acts as a memory "gateway" through which new memories must pass before entering permanent storage in the brain. Thus people with damage to the hippocampus can remember the distant past but cannot form new memories (Catherine, 2006).

Relieving Back Pain

An estimated eight out of ten people in the United States will injure their back at some point during their lives. Few of these problems will require extended treatment, but persistent back problems and back pain can still be very uncomfortable and stressful for many of us.

Managing and relieving back pain is not a simple process. The experience of back pain is subjective; so it's often difficult to easily measure the level of treatment necessary. In fact, many health providers who treat back pain find it challenging to obtain the measurable signs in order diagnose a patient's symptoms. Additionally, everyone's experience of back pain is different.

Back pain descriptions range from the slight -- such as; dull, sharp, and throbbing, to the extreme such as; pulsating, stabbing and shock-like -- just to name a few. People experience and describe back pain so differently partly due to its varied and complex origins. In fact, pain originates from numerous places in the body, such as muscles, bones, nerves, organs or blood vessels. It is for these reasons that it often is difficult to target the exact origin of someone's back pain.

Back pain can also be described as acute or chronic. The word "acute" derives from the Latin word for needles and is usually described as a severe, sharp sensation. The initial stage of an injury is called the acute phase. The word "chronic", on the other hand, originated from the Greek word for time. Chronic back pain is pain that persists after a length of time, often months to years. Many back injuries tend to become chronic, especially when not treated properly during the acute phase. Chronic back pain is often experienced as a dull ache or constant nagging irritant.

Acute and chronic back pain sensations also travel different nervous system pathways inside the body. When you injure muscles or ligaments in your back, nerve endings called pain receptors pick up the pain impulses and transmit them to the spinal cord. From here, the pain message ascends to the brain. This process takes place at varying rates of speed depending on the size of the nerve fiber involved. Acute back pain tends to travel on faster, larger diameter fibers, while chronic back pain prefers smaller, slower pain fibers. Experts suggest that chronic back pain affects the brain's limbic system, which is associated with emotional states. Anyone who has ever had a long-term painful back injury or regular back pain knows that negative or distressing emotions may accompany or perpetuate the initial injury.

The best way to treat chronic back pain is to prevent it. Although proficient early treatment does not always prevent an acute back pain injury from turning into a chronic problem, it is a good insurance policy. Early treatment is especially important with back pain injuries to the soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) to prevent them from becoming weaker, less elastic and more pain-sensitive. One of the best ways to treat both acute and chronic soft tissue injuries is a hands-on approach that works to repair the injured tissues. Some examples are joint and soft tissue manipulation and mobilization, typically performed by a chiropractor or osteopath.

A good chiropractor can make a big difference for most individuals experiencing either chronic or acute back pain. A chiropractor may suggest stretching exercises and make regular adjustments to a patient's back in order to relieve back pain. Other good options for back pain are massage and physical therapy. A formal rehabilitation program at a health club or therapy clinic may also help to strengthen weakened and damaged muscles, especially the core stabilizers of the back which often are the cause of chronic back pain. The healing power of the hands-on approach is a positive experience that many people enjoy through therapeutic massage or body work.

The effects of a good massage go much deeper than the skin's surface. Massage and chiropractic therapy can:

1) Help improve circulation of the blood and lower blood pressure while alleviating back pain.
2) Act as a detoxification system by propelling toxic waste products through the lymphatic system.
3) Help to improve muscle tone and prevent muscular atrophy resulting from inactivity or illness.
4) Reduce emotional stress and promote a sense of well-being.

How can something as simple as this hands-on therapy have so many positive benefits? A tense or painful muscle is one which is often chronically contracted. In an acute situation such as recent injury, the muscle can be in actual spasm. This contraction or spasm decreases the flow of blood to the muscle, which leads to a decrease in the nutrient and oxygen supply to the cells of the muscle and related nerves. A chronically contracted muscle will build up lactic acid, a sign of fatigue. This oxygen shortage and lactic acid buildup irritates the nerve cells, which perpetuates the contracted muscles - often resulting in discomfort and back pain. Massage and chiropractic therapy can help remove the lactic acid and other metabolic waste products from the cells and reverse this process, interrupting the vicious cycle of pain-spasm-pain. This can do wonders for most sufferers of back pain and have a lasting impact for many patients.

There are a multitude of massage styles which are beneficial to helping back pain. These options depend upon the individual's needs and preferences. They include:

Swedish Massage: this is the basic "relaxation" style of body work, which uses long strokes, squeezing and kneading. The Swedish practitioner helps to improve circulation and back pain by working to loosen or relax the superficial layers of muscle. This type of massage is particularly useful for muscles and back pain which are the result of stress or a tough workout, as it is often more gentle than other styles.

Sports Massage: this form of massage therapy works on a deeper level of musculature or connective tissue. This style fits more with the "no pain, no gain" philosophy. The therapist uses slow, hard strokes and deep, sustained finger pressure to work deeply into the contracted muscles, fascia and tendons to help alleviate back pain. This technique increases flexibility, encourages muscles to work at their fullest capacity, and speeds up the healing process by reducing swelling following an injury. It is especially indicated for athletes and "week-end warriors" who suffer from tight or sore muscles and can be another successful solution for back pain.

Shiatsu and Acupressure: rather than being simply relaxing, this form of body work tends to be invigorating. Fingers, thumbs, fists and elbows are used to apply pressure to points along acupuncture meridians, which are believed to be the energy pathways of the body and which can help alleviate a patient's back pain. The focus of this type of therapy is on relieving blocks in the pathways and re balancing the flow of energy.

Reflexology and Zone Therapy: reflexology works on the assumption that parts of the feet (as well as parts of the ears and hands) correspond to other parts of the body's anatomy. In other words, stress or illness in a certain part of the body may show up as a painful or sensitive area on a specific area of the foot. Reflexologists apply pressure to the side, top or bottom of the feet to help reduce dysfunction in other parts of the body which can be helpful for those suffering through chronic back pain.

Not all techniques work for everyone, so make sure to inquire about the philosophy and style of the massage therapist you call. If your massage isn't as satisfying as you had hoped or your back pain doesn't go away, don't give up, try another therapist!

Massage therapy schools are a cost-effective way to test out different styles of massage; senior students generally work for lower fees while they complete their internship. There are a few conditions in which massage would not be a good option for the treatment of back pain, such as inflammation, fever, significant swelling or very severe back pain. But for the garden variety aches and back pains that most of us experience, as well as for the general stresses of life, massage is an outstanding way to treat ourselves to a positive, revitalizing experience.

Emf's Affect on Biological Systems

What Are Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs), and How Do They Affect The Biological System?

Human beings and all other living creatures have their own electromagnetic energy balance. Since our first moments on Earth, we have encountered external EMFs as part of the Energetic Continuum. The planet is naturally webbed with simple EMFs that are interconnected with solar activities such as solar flares and atmospheric events such as lightening. The Earth itself has an iron core that generates a halo of electromagnetic energy, reaching far beyond our atmosphere. All life on Earth has adapted to and existed in this natural electromagnetic environment for millions of years.

But in the last century, we have radically altered our environment. We have saturated the planet with powerful human-made EMFs, the likes of which have never before been known on Earth. These human-made fields have a different wave form, coherence, and frequency than natural EMFs, and their effects on living biological systems are only just beginning to be understood.

Source of Concern

Magnetic fields do penetrate biological organisms. The fields that appear to be of most concern are those that are very strong, near the body, or of high frequency.

Strong fields are generated by transformers in electronic equipment, all motors, and wires carrying high current. The largest fields in the home are usually from the microwave oven, computers and televisions. Hair dryers, clocks and refrigerator motors can also be a big problem if near the body for long periods of time. Small fields near the body that can radiate magnetic fields and cause problems are those from electric blankets, heating pads, and laptop computers. High frequency EMFs are caused by dimmer switches, airline or automobile power systems, cellular phones, fluorescent lights, and many others.

The Studies Reveal The Health Hazards.

Countless studies have revealed the health hazards associated with electromagnetic fields (EMFs). These fields pervade our environment and have been implicated as a causative factor in countless health disorders, including childhood leukemia and fetal miscarriages. Yet not all EMFs are undesirable. Recent studies show that certain kinds of EMFs can help heal the body. Even more surprising, EMFs that have been deemed dangerous - such as those produced by computers, toasters, televisions, microwaves, and hair dryers - can be transformed into useful energy for the body. (Through the use of Tachyon Energy).

Reports began with the ground-breaking study conducted in 1979, at the University of Colorado, by epidemiologist, Nancy Werthheimer, Ph.D. Dr. Werthheimer established a firm connection between low-voltage power distribution lines in residential neighborhoods and increased incidence of childhood leukemia.

In 1990, The American Journal of Epidemiology reported two studies regarding the use of electric blankets. One "revealed a quadrupling in the risk of brain tumors among children whose mothers slept under electric blankets during the first trimester of pregnancy." The other indicated that children who used electric blankets were more likely to develop cancer. Findings also show that cancer is not the only ailment that can disrupt immune system function, modify brain waves, and cause other serious abnormalities in physical function and formation.

Research sponsored by northern California's Kaiser Permanente, the largest health maintenance organization in the United States, shows that women who work more than 20 hours per week at video display terminals (VDTs) have more health problems and nearly twice as many miscarriages as women working less time in front of computers. Babies born of pregnant women who work longer hours in front of VDTs also seem to have more birth defects and fetal abnormalities.

In early 1990, the EPA recommended that extremely low-frequency EMFs be classified as "a probable human carcinogen." Because of political pressure, they quickly retracted this statement in favor of the more benign announcement that: "research shows a consistent pattern of response which suggests, but does not prove, a causal link" between extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields and cancer.

Human-made EMFs do have a chaotic energy and different frequency than natural EMFs, and can disrupt or distort organic energy patterns. It is precisely this ability to distort human energy patterns that causes artificial EMFs to be hazardous. Human-made EMFs may cause cancer and present other grave dangers to human health. But don't Panic. It is possible to protect yourself and your loved ones from the EMFs produced in your home and/or workplace. In fact, you can do more than simply protect your family. Through the use of Tachyon Energy, studies demonstrate and experts report that Tachyon Energy actually turns hazardous EMFs into beneficial energy for the body.

Everyone a Changemaker of his or her Brain: Why Volunteer Programs can Improve Brain Fitness

Copyright (c) 2009 SharpBrains

There are dozens of environmental awards, but none like the Goldman Prize, which just celebrated its 20th birthday. I had the fortune to attend its most recent Award ceremony, which featured interventions by Al Gore, Tracy Chapman, Robert Redford, and the founder of the awards 20 years ago, Richard Goldman, and was impressed about the stories of seven grassroots pioneers.

The BBC recently published an Op-Ed by Mr. Goldman on the story behind the Awards themselves: article Here. He explains how...

- "One morning in 1989, as I sat with my daily breakfast and newspaper, I read about the most recent Nobel laureates and wondered if there was a comparable award for environmental work. We asked a staff member at our foundation to do some research and he found that nothing yet existed to recognise environmental work on an international stage, thus the Goldman Prize was born. Our choice to focus specifically on grassroots environmental leaders was unique at the time."

Mr. Goldman, and the seven winners, are clearly helping improve the state of the world.

Now, the "state of the world" does include their very own brains - a recent study showed how volunteering can provide health benefits - both physical and cognitive. From a recent article in Medical News:

- "She and her colleagues found that EC volunteers showed greater improvements in memory and executive function than those who did not participate in the program. Both studies highlighted above show that everyday activity interventions (e.g., EC) can appeal to older adults' desires to remain socially engaged and productive in their post-retirement years. These activities can bring -at the same time!- clear physical and mental benefits."

And those benefits do not accrue only for older adults, but may help all of us gradually build our Cognitive Reserve through the added novelty, variety and challenge.

Talk about win/ win!

So the question becomes, "How do I build a Cognitive Reserve?"

Emerging research since the 90s from the past decade shows that individuals who lead mentally stimulating lives, through their education, their jobs, and also their hobbies, build a "Cognitive Reserve" in their brains.

Stimulating the brain can literally generate new neurons and strengthen their connections which results in better brain performance and in having a lower risk of developing Alzheimer's symptoms. Studies suggest that people who exercise their mental muscles throughout their lives have a 35-40% less risk of manifesting Alzheimer's.

Further, better brain scanning techniques are allowing scientists to investigate healthy live brains for the first time in history. Two of the most important findings from this research are that our brains are plastic (meaning they not only create new neurons but also can change their structure) throughout a lifetime and that frontal lobes are the most plastic area. Frontal lobes, the part of our brains right behind the forehead, controls "executive functions" --- which determine our ability to pay attention, plan for the future and direct behavior toward achieving goals. They are very important to learn new realities. We offer them the best exercise by learning completely new things, by mastering new tasks.

That brain region is particularly vulnerable: our frontal lobes wait until our mid to late 20s to fully mature. They are also the first part of our brain to start to decline, usually by middle age.

Not enough young and middle-aged people are benefiting from this emerging research, since it has been perceived as something "for seniors.Of course, we need more research. But, this does not mean we cannot start caring for our brains today.

What are some options to work on our frontal lobes? We can summarize recommendations by focusing on the four main pillars of brain health: physical exercise, a balanced diet, stress management, and brain exercise.

Is there an easy way to hit several of these pillars at the same time? Well, what about volunteering for a cause you truly care about?

Ashoka, an innovative non-profit organization, best summarizes it by saying "Everyone a Changemaker". I'd add... "Everyone a Changemaker of his or her Brain."

Broca's region has been in the news ever since scientists realized that particular cognitive functions could be localized to parts of the cerebral cortex. Its discoverer, Paul Broca, was one of the first researchers to argue for a direct connection between a concrete behavior--in this case, the use of language--and a specific cortical region. Today, Broca's region is perhaps the most famous part of the human brain, and for over a century, has persisted as the focus of intense research and numerous debates. The name has even penetrated mainstream culture through popular science and the theater. Broca's region is famous for a good reason: As language is one of the most distinctive human traits, the cognitive mechanisms that support it and the tissues in which these mechanisms are housed are also quite complex, and so have the potential to reveal a lot not only about how words, phrases, sentences, and grammatical rules are instantiated in neural tissue, but also, and more broadly, about how brain function relates to behavior. Paul Broca's discoveries were an important, driving force behind the more general effort to relate complex behavior to particular parts of the cerebral cortex, which, significantly, produced the first brain maps. These early studies also, however, suffered from the use of crude techniques, definitions, and distinctions, as well as from ill founded and misdirected assumptions. Although much has been discovered since Broca's work, even today, these problems have not been completely solved. Nonetheless, particularly as a result of important advances made in neuroimaging during the past two decades, Broca's region and all language areas are currently being investigated from every angle. Indeed, as the volume of research into the relations between brain and language has created several communities, each with its own concepts, methods, and considerations, it seemed that it was time to stop, get together, and reflect on the state of the art. This book is the result of that collective reflection, which took place primarily at the Broca's Region Workshop, held in Julich and Aachen, Germany, in June 2004. In it, Yosef Grodzinsky and Katrin Amunts tried to accomplish a nearly impossible task: to mix intellectual traditions and cultures, and juxtapose rather disparate bodies of knowledge, styles of reasoning, and forms of argumentation. Participants were scientists with diverse backgrounds; each invited to contribute his/her particular take, with the hope that a coherent, perhaps even novel, picture would emerge. All of the participants have a special interest in Broca's Region, and represent the myriad angles from which we currently approach it: neuroanatomy, physiology, evolutionary biology, cognitive psychology, clinical neurology, functional imaging, speech and language research, computational biology, and psycho-, neuro-, and theoretical linguistics. The book's main chapters are the contributions of the Workshop's participa...

Katrina Firlik is a neurosurgeon, one of only two hundred or so women among the alpha males who dominate this high-pressure, high-prestige medical specialty. She is also a superbly gifted writer–witty, insightful, at once deeply humane and refreshingly wry. In Another Day in the Frontal Lobe, Dr. Firlik draws on this rare combination to create a neurosurgeon’s Kitchen Confidential–a unique insider’s memoir of a fascinating profession.Neurosurgeons are renowned for their big egos and aggressive self-confidence, and Dr. Firlik confirms that timidity is indeed rare in the field. “They’re the kids who never lost at musical chairs,” she writes. A brain surgeon is not only a highly trained scientist and clinician but also a mechanic who of necessity develops an intimate, hands-on familiarity with the gray matter inside our skulls. It’s the balance between cutting-edge medical technology and manual dexterity, between instinct and expertise, that Firlik finds so appealing–and so difficult to master. Firlik recounts how her background as a surgeon’s daughter with a strong stomach and a keen interest in the brain led her to this rarefied specialty, and she describes her challenging, atypical trek from medical student to fully qualified surgeon. Among Firlik’s more memorable cases: a young roofer who walked into the hospital with a three-inch-long barbed nail driven into his forehead, the result of an accident with his partner’s nail gun, and a sweet little seven-year-old boy whose untreated earache had become a raging, potentially fatal infection of the brain lining. From OR theatrics to thorny ethical questions, from the surprisingly primitive tools in a neurosurgeon’s kit to glimpses of future techniques like the “brain lift,” Firlik cracks open medicine’s most prestigious and secretive specialty. Candid, smart, clear-eyed, and unfailingly engaging, Another Day in the Frontal Lobe is a mesmerizing behind-the-scenes glimpse into a world of incredible competition and incalculable rewards.
