In addition to extensive references accessible via the Internet, chapters include glossaries of technical or uncommon terms.
Hemispheric specialization is involved in every aspect of sensory, cognitive, and motor systems integration. Study of the corpus callosum, the bands of tissue uniting the brain's two hemispheres, is central to understanding neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and behavior. It also brings the tools of hemispheric specialization to a fundamental problem of cognitive neuroscience: modularity and intermodular communication. This book summarizes current research on the human corpus callosum. It also provides a comprehensive introduction to cognitive neuroscience. Rather than viewing the field through the various systems of the mind/brain such as perception, action, emotion, memory, language, and problem solving, it takes a case studies approach. Focusing on the central problem of simple reaction time, it examines the most basic possible sequence of perception-decision-action. The task is to press a button with one hand as soon as a patch of light is detected in the peripheral visual field. When the patch appears in the visual field opposite the responding hand, there must be interhemispheric transfer prior to response. But transfer of what--a visual input code? A cognitive decision code? A motor response code? Combining animal models, normal human studies, and clinical evidence, the authors apply anatomical, physiological, and behavioral perspectives to this question. The emerging view is that the corpus callosum consists of many parallel interhemispheric channels for communication and control, and that every transfer channel is context-dependent and modulated by attention.
This is a 3-in-1 reference book. It gives a complete medical dictionary covering hundreds of terms and expressions relating to corpus callosum. It also gives extensive lists of bibliographic citations. Finally, it provides information to users on how to update their knowledge using various Internet resources. The book is designed for physicians, medical students preparing for Board examinations, medical researchers, and patients who want to become familiar with research dedicated to corpus callosum. If your time is valuable, this book is for you. First, you will not waste time searching the Internet while missing a lot of relevant information. what are the functions of sprinal nerve..etc in a rat...?
spinal nerves, spinal cord, medulla cerebellum and cerebrum -repate the morphology and location of each otf these parts of the nervus system to their functions./..? anyone know?!
similar to humans (so we do experiments on rats beforehand)
spinal nerves supplies the intercostal muscles (for respiration)
spinal cord: local reflexes as stretch reflex or evacuation of bladder in a baby
medulla oblongata (or brain stem): higher reflexes as light reflex causes meiosis & vegetative functions as CVS, RC, ...etc
cerebellum: for equilibrium
cerebrum: voluntery actions
Often we speculate why sleeping disorders are becoming an important subject in today's culture. According to the website Wikipedia there is a sum of 14 different disorders ranging from eye twitching to restless legs. A number of these problems are treatable and even avoidable when monitored by a practitioner or dedicated health expert.
Sleeping disorders can be very dangerous when they go undiagnosed. A lot of people who suffer from this disorder face a lot of life threatening problems for the reason that having a sleeping disorder can unfortunately dislodge them from living your ordinary life.
Because if they are spending more time distressing about their condition than getting the right amount of sleep then this can really overtake them, and just make matters worst. The predicament with many people who have a sleeping disorder is that they are not conscious of it being a problem until they realise that it is affecting their job and daily life. A large number of accidents that happen at home or at work are also due to people with some kind of sleeping problem. Individuals who go through this can also develop clinical depression since they feel like they are not capable to do any of the things that they used too, if they have been diagnosed with a sleep disorder.
A test called the Polysomnogram which is used to find out and identify a sleep disorder so that specialists and doctors can chart a treatment intended for that individual person as not all treatments are the same. Every now and then people who have disorders such as narcolepsy usually have their brain activity measured to see where they are reaching peak points of sleeping so they can be treated since narcoleptics can not really work on jobs that involve them operating machinery or other things for the reason that they have to be on the alert and wide awake to know what they are doing.
Having a sleeping disorder can make people believe they are not normal, but this is not so because the problem can be treated through medicine.
The normal person sleeps between 6-8 hours, but the most anyone sleeps is 10 hours. Individuals who sleep more than the accepted number of hours tend to throw their bodies off due to the fact that as you would expect we sleep and awake when the day changes. You should get the right amount of rest because your immune system can stress out when you do not get rest which can trigger other medical and health issues from the need of rest.
In this day and age younger people find that lifestyles trigger the use of drugs, drinking, smoking, and a poor diet consisting of a lot of damaging food choices and a lack of exercise and maintaining physical health.
A lot of times a sleep disorder can be caused from sickness or from the medications used to treat an illness. Mental health problems, such as depression, can also trigger on a sleep disorder.

This 8 th volume of the WPA series in Evidence and Experience in Psychiatry provides an update of research evidence and clinical experience concerning personality disorders. A general term for a group of behavioural disorders, personality disorders are usually characterised by lifelong, ingrained, maladaptive patterns of deviant behaviour, lifestyle and social adjustment that are different in quality from psychotic and neurotic symptoms.
"My child is having trouble in school. What should I do?" When parents are told that their child is having difficulty in school, they often don’t know where to turn for reliable information and advice. They may be confused by conflicting claims of "cures" or may mistakenly think that, because some learning problems are genetically based, they can do nothing to help. Even the terminology of learning disorders is confusing: dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADD, ADHD, autism, Asperger’s syndrome, NVLD, executive function disorder—what are all these conditions, how do they differ from one another and, most important, what practical steps should parents and teachers take to remedy the situation? This comprehensive, practical guide to children’s learning problems should be the first resource parents and teachers reach for when a child shows signs of difficulty in academic, social, or behavioral learning. Drawing on her decades of experience, educator Jane Healy offers understandable explanations of the various types of learning disorders. She distills the latest scientific research on brains, genes, and learning as she explains how to identify problems—even before they are diagnosed—and how to take appropriate remedial action at home, at school, and in the community. Today’s fast-paced, stressed-out culture is hazardous to growing minds, says Healy, and a growing "epidemic" of children’s disorders is the result. Different Learners offers a complete program not only for treating the child, but also for making more beneficial lifestyle choices at home and improving teaching techniques at school. It shows parents and caregivers how to prevent some learning difficulties from ever happening in the first place. It explains how to have your child evaluated if necessary, and, if a problem is found, how to evaluate various treatments. Different Learners explains how medications for attention and learning wo

Until recently, bipolar disorders were almost never diagnosed in children and rarely recognized in adolescents, even though between 20 and 40 percent of the two million or more adults diagnosed with bipolar disorders in the United States experienced the onset of illness in their teen years or before. Psychiatrists now recognize that manic depression has frequently been misdiagnosed as ADHD (or oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, or depression). According to recent data, 23 percent of children currently diagnosed with ADHD will evenutally be diagnosed as having a bipolar disorder. As many as a million children in the US alone may have childhood-onset bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorders are different in children than in adults. There are some diagnostic criteria unique to children. Some reckless behavior is limited by being a child and being under adult control. Families and communities pay a heavy toll when this disorder is not recognized and treated. Suicide is a possible outcome, as are school failure, limited job prospects, legal difficulties, and hospitalizations. Understanding and recognizing the differences in the illness for children and adolescents is key for concerned parents and professionals. Bipolar Disorders covers the range of topics that parents need to know about in order to help their children: Description of the range of bipolar disorders Diagnostic criteria, current and proposed, including comparisons to common misdiagnoses Family life with bipolar disorders, including recognizing and preventing mood swings, safety, and support Medications, with special attention to the physiology and responses of children and adolescents Therapeutic interventions in various "talk therapies" Other interventions, such as improving sleep patterns, preventing seasonal mood swings, diet, and supplements Insurance issues school, including special education system and 504 Plans or EIPs As author Mitzi Waltz notes, "With early intervention, the possibilities for these kids are limitless."

human brain hemisphere How can i alter my own brian?
How can i change my own brain literally by altering neural speeds, re-balancing left and right hemispheres and becoming more creative, and change my personality overall. Also constructing a brain to allow me to have superior intelligence over all other human beings??? Is it possible to bang the left side of my brain so it becomes damaged and only my right hemisphere is working and i will more creative than ever?
Yes. In fact, your brain is constantly altering itself, making new connections, pruning unused ones. You'll be more creative than ever if you take care of your whole brain. It's an oversimplification that only the right brain is responsible for creativity. Changing your personality and improving intelligence requires habituation. Practice! Work! Think! Changes in behavior manifest in changes in the brain, and vice-versa. Though the personality thing might be more difficult. .. Remember also that the brain operates in part by the use-it-or-lose-it principle. You'll find it harder, even impossible, to learn new things if you haven't tried earlier on, like learning the piano, or learning a new language. I've been a bit rusty with arithmetic ever since we were allowed to use calculators. haha.

Right-Brain vs. Left-Brain: Working with Creatives
Most people by now have heard of the theory that there are 2 sides to the brain and each person is dominant on either one side or the other. The theory of the right brain-left brain grew out of the work of Roger W. Sperry, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1981. As a result of this study, most people believe that they are destined to be either a painter or a mathematician. But that is not entirely true.
We can tell there is a difference between the two sides of the brain and the people they are attached to just by talking maps. There are the people that give directions by saying things like, “Go North on Vine Street and then right on Main Street.” Other people will say, “Take this road to the McDonald’s and go left and then at the second stoplight go right.” Or another example is some people write the directions. Some people have to draw a map.
If you are the more written directions-type person, the dominance in you brain is probably going to be the left side. If you understand drawing and visual landmarks, your strength is probably going to be the right side.
This theory basically says that creative, visual people have their strength on their right side. And as a result, the best communication with them will circle around more visual examples. And communication includes facial and body language too, as they are more perceptive in that regard as well.
Creative people also grasp concepts much quicker if they know that whole picture first and then work backward. As in, “Our goal is to get this specific client and here is how we would like to get there.” Because they are experts in problem solving, you need to talk fast, because they will start to generate ideas before you are done explaining, which is where the value comes in on your team. Logical answers don’t always work. Sometimes something completely different and untried could be the answer.
There is a fun test you can take, provided by the Art Institute of Vancouver, to see where your or someone else’s brain dominance is:
