Research About Bad Habits

Bad habits plague many people in one form or another. We want to know what causes us to fall into bad habits. Questions arise about how are the best ways to quit. New research gives new answers and confirms some of the old ones.

Some research has been done to find out what motivates people to quit bad habits. It turns out that the emotional reasons seem to be the most telling of all. If a person does not have the desire to change, then that person is likely not to have any success with quitting.

Knowledge is only helpful if you use it to influence your emotional well-being. For example, if you work to set up a social network to help you when you quit smoking, you have used your mind to influence your emotions. Penalties help drive people to quit bad habits by playing on their emotions and their intelligence together.

Other research inquires into the effects of habitual activities on the brain. Researchers studied the brain responses in rats. The rats were sent through mazes at the end of which was chocolate. Their basal ganglia (where habitual behavior is learned in the brain) responded to all the information in the maze when they were learning the maze.

After awhile, this area of the brain only responded to the beginning and end of the maze. This would be like the response you have when you have developed bad habits. You are focused on the reward.

Then, the chocolate was removed. At that point, the basal ganglia again began to respond to every part of the maze again. When this happens, it is like quitting bad habits and living moment to moment.

When the chocolate was reintroduced, the area in the brain came alive during the beginning and the end, as before. Finally, the brain is cued to become alert to your addiction again when the desired object or bad habits resurface.

Another study evaluated the ability of people to replace old habits with new ones. This was done by testing using memorization and word tests. The researchers tried to see if subjects could learn new associations after learning similar ones first.

The conclusions of the test were interesting. First of all, the habits learned first were more automatic and below the conscious level. Second, stress caused people to revert to old habits.

Third, aging that affected the memory seemed to leave the subjects with more susceptibility to older habits. All this information can be used by people who struggle against bad habits.

One study took a look at the way people think about risky behavior. Surveys were given out in two different parts of Canada to find out what these people thought were the most dangerous. In the majority of cases, people thought that bad habits like smoking, overeating, and other health habits were more risky than non-habitual behaviors.

It is important to study how we think and feel about, and react to bad habits. The more we know, the better chance people have of learning how to overcome them. With good research being done, bad habits may be easier to break in the long run.

Human Behavior and the Developing Brain

Human Behavior and the Developing Brain

$80.98

Over the past few decades, innovative, noninvasive techniques for studying the activity of the brain have provided new insights into brain-behavior relations. Now, developmental scientists are using these techniques with young infants and children to shed light on the neural underpinnings of the developmental process. This highly enlightening text brings together a group of world-renowned scientists who believe, and demonstrate, that understanding brain-behavior relations from a developmental standpoint will yield fresh and unique insights into human nature. This volume--one of a limited number of texts that provide a voice for a growing new generation of developmentalists interested in the brain--is distinguished by its breadth of topics, which include the development of memory, cognition, and emotions, and individual differences in these domains. The editors have divided the book into four sections. Section I provides a historical review and broad theoretical framework for considering brain-behavior relations from a developmental perspective. The role of electrophysiology (EEG) in developmental research is also examined. Chapters in Section II focus on developmental changes in the brain, as indexed by changes in synaptic connections, glucose metabolism, and EEG power and coherence. Using changes in neural activity as indicators of important developmental transitions, a biological perspective on human psychological development is offered.Section III addresses concepts of developing brain behavior relations. Neural correlates of developmental processes pertaining to memory, emotional expression and emotion regulation, spatial representation, and language are discussed. Finally, Section IV examines brain activity as a predictor of individual differences in behavior. Authors explore the use of electrophysiological measures in early infancy to explain individual differences in temperament, affective style, language, and attentional abilities. While accessible to those with little background in the neurosciences, this book adequately portrays the complexity and depth of brain-behavior relations in development. An important resource for investigators in the fields of developmental psychology, neuropsychology, behavioral neuroscience, clinical psychology, and education, it also serves as a textbook for graduate students, especially advanced students of human psychological development.

10 Things That Can Make Your Man Stop Loving You

While you may think that you must do something very major in order for your relationship to go sour, the truth is that there are some apparently small things that have major consequences.  As a woman, there are some things that you may do without even thinking about them, which may seem very insignificant. Unfortunately, such apparently small things may make the love of your man vanish. Let us take a look at some of the things you should be aware of so that you do not fall victim to a broken relationship.

1. Making pretence

You try to be something or someone you are not, the man will really hate you for it when he discovers the truth. And the truth eventually shows through. Do not fake interests you do not really have in a bid to attract a man. One of the things that we usually think that we must lie about is our age. But even this may ruin your relationship.

2. Being dependent

While men would like us to want them, they do not take kindly to the women who seem unable to survive without them. He will simply avoid you as he looks for some breathing space.

3. Poor listening skills

In general, we often talk more than the men. However, you may get so carried away with your own talking that you do not pay attention to him. Let him tell you about his side as well if you want him to keep on loving you.

4. Poor spending habits

Once you have gotten closer together, the man may share his money with you. When he notices that you spend money carelessly, he will lose interest in you. You should both make a budget, and ensure that you stick to it.

5. Thinking of yourself

You should bear in mind that a relationship involves two people. When you constantly think of your own needs, the man's love will wane. Both of you should take part in planning and carrying out the plans.

6. Playing with his emotions

In case you do not really feel anything special for a man, do not mislead him and drawing his emotions.

7. Outrunning him

You should take things one step at a time. Do not try to rush him into commitments he is not yet ready for. If you seem to be nagging him, he will lose interest in the relationship.

8. Being too rigid

When you do not change your mind on some things no matter what, he will change his mind about you instead. And you should not blow things out of proportion.

9. Being over-protective

You should understand that the man may have other female friends. When you get unreasonably jealous towards them, the man won't praise you for it.

10. Demanding his constant attention

When you want the man to think of you at all times, how do you expect him to concentrate even on his work?

Is Blindness Curable?

How can a blind man navigate flawlessly through a path, without any difficulty in being able to perceive objects?

A blind former physician has amazingly good spatial orientation ability, as an international team of researchers discovered that although some areas of his brain were completely destroyed, the 56-year-old walked through an obstacle course without erring on any of the obstacles encountered.

People cannot believe it, but the man previously felt totally blind, and usually required either a walking stick or use of the assistance of others to move him. "This is absolutely the first observation of this ability in a human," says study director Beatrice de Gelder of the University of Tilburg.

The patient, as the researchers refer to, suffered two strokes within an interval of 36 days, the first stroke affected the left side of his neck and damaged his right hemisphere. As a result, he lost the gift of sight completely, but otherwise, apart from mild disorders, he remained mentally perfect.

The type of blindness he had is also called cortical blindness, since the fault is not only in the eye, but in the cerebral cortex, and especially where the visual cortex of the occipital lobe, is located.

People with cortical blindness are somewhat blind, and sometimes have unconscious responses to visual stimuli. This also applied to the study patient. In 2004 researchers discovered that his brain responded to emotional facial expressions, fear, anger and joy without much difficulty.

The current study now shows that his brain is even more capable. Although the patient uses the help of a walking stick or movement aid, he traversed a maze of boxes and chairs without help and without hitting even one of the objects there - a benefit to him at the end of the task, resulting in spontaneous applause from the spectators who were present and the researchers studying him.

Something similar had so far scientists only once seen, using a monkey named Helen, whose damage in the brain was much less pronounced than this specific patient.

The brain apparently has hidden resources that can activate in the event of an emergency, suggest de Gelder and her colleagues from the results. You suspect that for complicated navigation through obstacles, specific areas of the brain are used, and basic and essential parts of the brain are used for very basic survival skills such as the orientation.

This is the part that may be needed for our vision, but this is still not completely understood, as de Gelder puts it. The patient’s performance illustrates the importance of this evolutionary mechanism in the brain.

The brain has a remarkable ability to adapt in the event of damage - in many cases shifting responsibility for specific cognitive functions to other non-damaged brain regions. This 'plasticity' can be crucial in aiding recovery from stroke, trauma, and peripheral damage such as eye or ear damage. Over the past thirty years our view of cortical plasticity has evolved greatly. Early studies suggested that changes to cortical function due to peripheral lesions could only occur during development and that these plastic changes were specific to a particular temporal window or "critical period". Over time, it has been demonstrated that cortical modifications as a consequence of either peripheral or central lesions can induce adaptive, or beneficial, changes in cortical function in an effort to preserve or enhance function. More recently, studies have identified that many of these adaptive changes, once thought only possible in the developing brain, are also possible in the mature or developed brain. At present, many laboratories are defining the beneficial capabilities of cerebral cortex plasticity, upon which many proactive and therapeutic strategies may be developed in order to maximiSe the "reprogramming" capabilities of the cerebrum. 'Reprogramming the Cerebral Cortex' describes these exciting studies and examines adaptive cortical plasticity in a variety of systems (visual, auditory, somatomotor, cross-modal, language and cognition). The book leads the reader through the complexities and promise of neuroplasticity, and presents insights into current and future research and clinical practice. It is unique in looking at the beneficial capabilities of cerebral cortex plasticity, upon which many proactive and therapeutic strategies may be developed. The book will be a valuable resource for behavioural, systems, computational and cognitive neuroscientists, as well as clinicians and neuropsychologists.

The results can be astounding. You can boost your mental alertness, increase concentration, promote learning, enhance both short-term and long-term memory, and keep your senses sharp. Your brain requires a constant source of high-quality nutrition. The brain is so metabolically active that a deficiency of any of a number of nutrients can lead to poor mental function, depression, or other serious mental disorders. Since the neurons in your brain communicate through neurotransmitters, you need to supply your body with the raw materials needed to keep a constant supply of neurotransmitters available. There are more than fifty known neurotransmitters. Some are found only in the central nervous system, while others are active there and elsewhere in the body. Here are some nutrients for boosting your brain and nerve function.

1. Boost Choline Intake

Choline, a B vitamin-like substance, is a crucial ingredient in the membranes found in every one of your cells. Dietary or supplementary choline can boost the production of acetylcholine and thus is important for memory, learning, and mental alertness. Rich food sources of choline include lecithin, peanuts, wheat germ, and soy foods. Choline is also found in good levels in Brussels sprouts, oatmeal, soybeans, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, spinach, lettuce, and potatoes. The best forms of choline for supplementation are phosphatidylcholine, glycerophosphocholine, and cytosine diphosphocholine, but supplementation is usually not necessary if you boost dietary sources.

2. Boost Your Antioxidant Intake

Vitamins C and E are found in high levels in the brain and nervous system. Because the brain cells are high in unsaturated fat, they are especially vulnerable to damage by free radicals. There is mounting scientific and clinical evidence that the higher the intake of antioxidants over time, the better the mental function later in life. A high intake of these nutrients is also associated with a significantly lower risk for both Alzhemier’s and Parkinson’s disease. Taking 500 to 1,500 mg of vitamin C and 400 to 800 IU of vitamin E is recommended.

3. Balance Your Electrolytes

The ability of a nerve to fire depends on the presence of electrolytes – minerals such as potassium, sodium, chloride, and magnesium dissolved in water. They are termed electrolytes to signify their critical role in conducting electricity in the human body. If you have too much sodium and too little potassium in your diet, the imbalance can slow down the ability of neurons to conduct signals. Boosting potassium and magnesium while restricting sodium intake is a very important dietary recommendation for tuning up brain and nervous system function. Eating more whole, unprocessed foods and avoiding high-salt processed foods and table salt is all that is needed for most people to get their potassium and sodium in balance.

4. Take B Vitamins

These vitamins are crucial for brain and nerve function. B1 and B2 help control the use of glucose by neurons. They also help your body make fatty acids needed to preserve the integrity of nerve cell membranes. Along with vitamin B5, they are important for making acetylcholine and thus for helping memory function. Vitamin B2 (niacin) is vital for proper mental function. People who suffer from niacin deficiency often exhibit signs of dementia. Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) acts like a biological shuttle service, ferrying amino acids into the brain for its use in making neurotransmitters. Lack of B6 can cause abnormal brain wave patterns and a decrease in nervous system activity. Vitamin of B12 helps your brain make use of carbohydrates and proteins. It is also vital for producing the myelin sheath that protects the axons of your nerve cells. Folic acid works as a partner with vitamin B12 in many biochemical processes in the brain, including the manufacture of neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. Impaired mental acuity (or dementia) and depression are common symptoms of folic acid or B12 deficiency. Deficiencies of these nutrients are common, especially in elderly subjects, and are an often overlooked cause of dementia and depression.

Patterns of Intelligence in Apes

The use of tools in the blustery by chimpanzees has been practical and well established for sometime now and in detail newly chimps have also been observed successfully hunting lemurs with crude yet character-crafted spears. On the other hand tool use by gorillas in the fierce has been little observed and certainly not to the same corner or sophistication as they're more rambunctious cousins, the chimpanzee. So then do these observations lay to support once and for all the age old quandary about "which species of ape is second to man in intelligence?"

It is now recognized that certain regions of the soul head play a more significant task in the processes of functional recall, emotional behavior, creative thought, motor restraint (transfer), forecast and certitude making as well as talking. The aspect of the head most carefully associated with such processes is the front lobe.

Many of the sophisticated behavioral patterns and attributes characteristic of humans are believed to originate from the fore lobe and in statement this area of the reason has been identified as the most probable nominee responsible for species-explicit cognitive ability and characteristics.

Bearing the in thoughts, it little speculate the researchers and scientists are eagerly studying anatomical comparisons of the brains of the great apes (man inclusive) with particular weight on the front lobes of the clever hemispheres of the wits.

Though it is now understood that regular intellect-to-body bulk comparisons are woefully inadequate to assess inclusive intellectual capability there is still some charge in applying it as a tool of rate or at the very slightest as a comparative assessment.

When evaluating mind dimension data one has to carry in mind that there is significant sexual dimorphism (departure between females and males) across some of the great apes; most normally head ability/range is bigger in chap specimens than females, however like humans, the Bonobo primate (Pan paniscus) shows little if any magnitude/gift change. That said, though a comparative appraise of the cranial aptitude of the great apes is not a particularly accurate assessment of largely intelligence it does have its virtues.

The next records are mean morals generated from varying mass samples of both female and male specimens of the many great apes: Humans: 1400cc; Gorillas: 500cc; Chimpanzee: 405cc; Orangutan: 355; Gibbons: 104cc.

From these numbers you can see that the mind level of the being been is almost 3x the quantity of the next candidate, the heavy. Regarding those records what is of particular comment is that the cranial size of the brute apparently exceeds that of the chimpanzee yet all observed support tends to reveal that the chimpanzee is more intelligent than the gorilla.

Again this to some boundary reaffirms the ahead observation the wits power alone does not copious account for intellectual ability. It should also be renowned that studies conducted by different researchers often resulted with fairly different conclusions notably that the cranial part of the gorilla exceeded that of the chimpanzee; for the other great apes the cranial capacities were commonly the same across many examine data.

So if total cranial role is a lowly indicator of intelligence what then could be a better tool of gauge so to verbalize?

As previously mentioned the fore lobes of the clever hemispheres of the mind are now recognized as the seat or spotlight responsible for those behavioral characteristics that distinguish us as person being.

It wholly logically follows then that establishing the variations and morphological differences within the logical frontal lobe areas of gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos and orangutans and comparing them to those of the creature being is as good a place as any to best control which of the great apes is next to man in intelligence and what particular skin of the human brain (other than generally volume) account for man's intellectual uniqueness
