Projection radiography
you may call them radiographs or more formally Roentgenographs, because they're named after the discoverer of X-rays, Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen. Radiation which has passed through a patient then exposes onto an X-ray film. Areas of film exposed to higher amounts of radiation will usually appear dark gray after development. The unexposed areas of film of course stay white.

Fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy and angiography are special applications of X-ray imaging, in which a fluorescent screen or image intensifier tube is connected to a small television system, which allows real-time imaging of structures in motion. Radiocontrast agents are administered, which are often swallowed or injected into the body of the patient, that help delineate anatomy such as the blood vessels, the genitourinary system or the gastrointestinal tract. There is a radiocontrast agent for each specific type of evaluation. For example, barium in a suspension is administered into the gastrointestinal tract and the image is taken with fluoroscopy or radiography. Radiocontrast agents, which 'soak up' X-ray radiation, in conjunction with the real-time imaging allows demonstration of dynamic processes. Peristalsis in the digestive tract or blood flow in arteries and veins can easily be seen dynamically this way, for instance.

CT scanning
CT imaging uses X-rays in conjunction with computing algorithms to take an image of a variety of soft tissues in the body. CT is acquired in the axial plane, while coronal and sagittal images can be rendered by computer software reconstruction. It is of course only recently that the combined studies of computer imaging such as 3D ray-tracing and Computer Assisted Design have made this process possible. Yes, CT imaging owes a little debt to movies like "Tron"! Radiocontrast agents are often used with CT for enhanced delineation of the patient's anatomy. Intravenous contrast allows 3D reconstructions of arteries and veins, showing them as a network of branching tunnels in real-time space. While radiographs provide higher resolution for bone X-rays, CT can generate much more detailed images of the soft tissues. CT exposes the patient to more ionizing radiation than a radiograph, which is the main reason it isn't used any more oftan than it needs to be.

Ultrasound
Medical ultrasonography uses ultrasound, literal high-frequency sound waves, to visualize soft tissue structures in the body in real time. No ionizing radiation is involved, but the quality of the images obtained using ultrasound is highly dependent on the skill of the person performing the exam, who is known as the ultrasonographer. The use of ultrasound in medical imaging has developed mostly within the last thirty years. The first ultrasound images were static and two dimensional, but with modern-day ultrasonography 3D reconstructions can be observed in real-time. Because ultrasound does not utilize ionizing radiation like radiography, CT scans, and nuclear medicine imaging techniques, it is generally considered safer. For this reason, this imaging method plays a vital role in obstetrical imaging. Fetal development can be thoroughly evaluated, allowing early diagnosis of fetal anomalies or confirmation of a normal gestation.

MRI/NMR
MRI uses strong magnetic fields to align spinning hydrogen proton nuclei within body tissues, then uses a radio signal to disturb the axis of rotation of these nuclei. It then observes the radio frequency signal generated as the nuclei return to their baseline states. MRI scans give the highest quality soft tissue contrast of all the imaging modalities. With advances in scanning speed and spatial resolution and improvements in computer 3D algorithms and hardware, MRI has made greatleaps forward in the recent years. One distinct disadvantage is that the patient has to hold still for long periods of time in a noisy, cramped space while the imaging is performed. Recent improvements in magnet design like wider, shorter magnet bores and more open magnet designs, have brought some relief for claustrophobic patients, who previously had to be sedated – unfortunate if you are looking at the brain on the MRI, since the brain shows different activity when sedated. MRI has it's best benefit in imaging the brain, spine, and musculoskeletal system. The modality can be contraindicated for patients with pacemakers (watch out for those magnets!), certain types of cerebral aneurysmal clips or metallic hardware due to the strong magnetic fields. Areas of present advancement include functional imaging, cardiovascular MRI, as well as MR image guided therapy.

The First Review:

Author William R. Potter takes the reader into the heart and soul of his protagonist and into the warped mind of a psychopath. Potter’s first full length novel, Dead of Knight is told from the point-of-view of Detective Jack Staal and from the perspective of a killer who murders women on their birthdays.

Through clever use of back story, we learn that Detective Staal is suffering from post-traumatic stress after a horrific shooting. Unable to shake the horror of that day, Staal has left his position with the Vancouver PD’s homicide squad and has resurrected his career with the police service in a fictional country town called Hanson, British Columbia.

Anxious to work the biggest case of his career, Staal is forced to the outside when the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s Integrated Homicide Teams are assigned to the case. Not one to sit on the sidelines, Staal convinces his colleagues to follow his lead and pursue a serial killer the media has dubbed Birthday Boy.

Believing he is a soldier of justice, a misguided young man has begun a callous campaign of terror. Damian Knight (Birthday Boy) is convinced of his righteousness and continues his brutal crusade of revenge. As his death count mounts, so does Knight’s courage and he soon turns his anger on a fatigued Staal. Staal and Knight play out a cat and mouse thrill ride that culminates with an epic, one-on-one meeting of cop versus killer.

Potter has created an intriguing police procedural with a strong main character, a terrific supporting cast, and a plot with twists, turns, and plenty of red herrings. I have read many books in this genre featuring a main character that is a bullet-proof, womanizing Neanderthal. However, Potter’s Jack Staal takes a pounding, both physically and emotionally. This is one author who isn’t afraid to show his hero breaking down or making mistakes. Potter has penned a captivating tale filled with plenty of tension and conflict, crisp dialogue and an unrelenting pace. He puts us in the story with vivid descriptions and scene-painting narrative.

I highly recommend Dead of Knight -A Jack Staal Mystery. It is sure to delight fans of Patricia Cornwell’s Kay Scarpetta or Michael Connelly’s Harry Bosch.

Beauty Trumps Brains or Athletic Talent

No, it's boys we are talking about.

In June of this year, Akihabara, world-famous as a center for electronics and geek culture was the scene of a random murder incident. The killer was a 25-year old man who was a temporary employee at an auto parts factory. This explosion of dissatisfaction at not being a regular, full-time employee became the occasion for public debate about the need to address the issue of structural inequality in Japan's workforce. Looking more closely at this incident reveals trends of importance to marketers.

In my own recent research there is no avoiding the fact that temporary employees, especially the males among them, see themselves as belonging to a lower social class than regular employees. Among men aged 25-29, technical school graduates, and temporary employees, all attributes shared with the killer, 67.3% rated themselves as lower-middle or lower class. The comparable figure for regular, full-time employees was 38.87%. Among the former, only 34.6% saw themselves as wholly or partially satisfied with their lives as a whole; among the latter the figure was 50.2%,

Clearly, then, employment status has a strong effect on the class identification and lifestyle satisfaction of men of the same age. This was, undeniably, part of the social background to the random killings in Akihabara.

This is not, of course, to say that all temporary employees are likely to become criminals. Most take their jobs seriously. What, then, was it that triggered this incident?

Another of the killer's attributes was a severe inferiority complex about his personal appearance. Feeling unloved and without a girlfriend, he harbored a strong sense of his own inferiority. He appears to have been one of those men who have a hard time communicating with women. This may have reflected the influence of his mother, who was very strict when it came to relations between the sexes. Why, however, was his inferiority complex so strong? This is something a man in his fifties like me finds it difficult to understand.

When I was young, many of us had inferiority complexes about our appearance. I was no exception. In my generation, however, those who weren't handsome could study hard or excel at sports. We might not be loved because we were not pretty, but we could imagine ourselves being loved if we did well at our studies, and, no question about it, athletes were always popular.

Among today's young men, however, self-confidence based on academic or athletic ability isn't enough, it appears, to make up for not being good-looking. In my 2007 study of the Z generation (aged 15-22), the self-confidence of those who saw themselves as loved because they were handsome was higher than those who attended famous schools or liked to study. A repeat of that study in 2008 produced the same result.

In contrast to the men, however, women from higher ranked schools and women who liked to study ranked higher on self-confidence than women who saw themselves as popular or good-looking. The common sense of 20 years ago has been turned on its head. Now it is men more than women who feel that they have to be beautiful in order to get ahead. This assumption now shapes men's perceptions and behavior.

Men with confidence in their looks are more likely to be interested in automobiles, travel and drinking. Twenty years ago, interest in automobiles, travel and drinking had no correlation at all with a man's looks. Now it is only men who see themselves as good-looking who are likely to have these interests. Today's young men are also less likely to spend on cars, travel and liquor. Underlying this phenomenon, however, may be an inferiority complex about their looks. As the number of those who go to extremes in looking down on themselves increases, their behavior becomes more passive; their participation in consumption declines.

But why should today's young men be so concerned about their appearance? Possible factors include the spread of information about men's fashion and the growing penetration of men's cosmetics. Both suggest that it is unacceptable to be ugly. Second, with women now playing more active roles in society, they are now able to pick and choose, making it hard for men who don't look good to find lovers or wives. Poor looks are also a barrier when men go looking for jobs. A third factor that appears in young people's answers to our questions is the influence of celebrities. Since the emergence of SMAP, a group of singers and comics who are all quite handsome, both singers and comics now have to be good-looking. It used to be that comics, at least, could be ugly if they were able to make people laugh. If even comics have to be handsome, there are no longer openings for young men with not-so-pretty looks. A fourth factor has been the decline in the belief that studying hard is the key to getting into a good university and finding a good job. All these factors, working together, have increased the value of men's appearance.
