cerebellum tumors

Supernatural Episode
Before reading this, I recommend that you read "Supernatural Episode "A Light in the Midst of Darkness" Pt 9", thank you.
I had one of these, endotracheal tubes, during my operations, and I was wondering why the back of my throat was a bit sore (this was at the public hospital). It felt like the back of my throat and nose feel when a cold is coming on. It was this tube which had been the cause for this pain.
Orotracheal- (sometimes used interchangeably with endotracheal) The act of placing a tube in the patient's mouth. The breathing tube is used to simulate breathing functionality. This often occurs before surgery.
Cephalus- The brain, from the Greek word "encephalon" or translated "in the head". The brain is the center of the central nervous system. In the brain are the neurons. These are cells which are in charge conveying information to other cells. In addition to the neurons, the glial cells, in the Greek "glia" means glue, form a support system for the neurons.
Tumor- Tumor literally means "swelling", it is an inflammation. The word is used to denote abnormal growth of tissue.
Malignant and Benign- Malignant tumors are considered to be life threatening or cancerous. Benign tumors are considered by doctors to be harmless. A brain tumor consisting of benign cells in a vital area is considered malignant. Benign tumors do not invade neighboring tissues, but may grow locally to a great size. Usually they do not
return after they are surgically removed.
Malignant tumors are cancerous. Cancerous tumors have the potential to invade and destroy neighboring tissues. They change their state, or metastasize.
The older a person gets, their DNA becomes more and more mutated. Cancer is caused by mutated DNA cells. An accumulation of mutated cells cause
tumors to emerge.
Cerebellar - This word comes from the Latin word meaning "little brain". The cerebellum is about 10% of the entire brain, but has about half of the neurons of the entire brain. It integrates sensory perception and motor output. The cerebellum is
largely involved in bodily coordination. Cerebellar disorders include clumsiness, imbalance, and troubles with stabilizing eye movements.
Anything which affects the left cerebral hemisphere of the brain, affects the right side of the body.
Depending on the severity, a stroke or an operation such as mine affecting the left cerebral hemisphere may result in functional loss or motor skill impairment of the right side of the body, and may also cause loss or impairment of speech. Any tumors in the cerebellar area of the brain are very dangerous because they are so close to the brain
stem and the spinal cord.
This illustration is a good one to describe what the cerebellum looks like and the surrounding areas. (link in ebook or handheld)
Above: If one was to look at the cerebellum from the left side they would see...
A: Midbrain
B: Pons
C: Medulla
D: Spinal cord
E: Fourth Ventricle
F: Arbor vitae (Tree of life)
G: Tonsil
H: Anterior lobe
I: Posterior lobe
ICP- intercranial pressure
Ventricular- the place of the drain which was used to drain the excess CSF (cerebralspinal fluid) from the ventricles in my brain. The drain may be inserted by the doctor to measure the ICP (pressure) inside the head, or to drain excess CSF from the
brain. The ventricular system protects the brain from trauma and transports the CSF.
Cerebrospinal Fluid- CSF. Fluid which flows through the ventricles and is absorbed into the blood stream. This is a clear fluid produced by the choroid plexus (actually there are 2 in the 3rd and 4th ventricle) which is located in certain parts of the
ventricular system of the brain. The ventricles are large cavities in the brain that produce and reabsorb the CSF. This fluid bathes the brain and spinal cord
and gives them support and buoyancy to protect from injury. This fluid is made by the body continuously. As soon as the new fluid is made, the old fluid is absorbed by the body. The functionality of this fluid includes:
1. Protection- buffers the brain from any damage. The CSF acts to cushion any blow
to the head and lessens the impact.
2. Buoyancy- Since the brain is immersed in fluid, pressure at the base of the brain is
reduced.
3. Excretion of waste products- the one-way flow of the CSF to the blood takes
potentially harmful metabolites, drugs and other substances away from the brain.
4. Endocrine medium for the brain- the CSF serves to transport hormones to other areas of the brain. Hormones released in the CSF can be carried to remote sites of the brain where they may act.
Periumbilical- The place on the body just below the belly button.
Subcutaneous- The layer of skin below the dermis. This layer of fat contains the larger blood vessels and nerves of the skin. The three skin layers are the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous fat.
Hemostat- Used to control hemorrhage in neurosurgery.
Ventrally- To be situated close to the belly or otherwise called the abdomen.
Temporalis muscle- The temporalis muscle runs along the sides of the cranium, starting in the region of your "temples." This muscle is responsible for elevating the mandible (part of the teeth). The mandible, by the way, is the strongest bone in the face.
