Qigong, Electricity & The Human Body

Electricity, defined by Merriam-Webster, is as follows: a fundamental form of energy observable in positive and negative forms that occurs naturally (as in lightning) or is produced (as in a generator) and that is expensed in terms of the movement and interaction of electrons.

Generally speaking, when thinking of electricity, we think of it as something external to our human bodies: the naturally occurring lightning and human created technology being two said instances. There is, however, a form of electricity that is prevalent in every living creature: bioelectricity.

Bioelectricity is the electric phenomena related to living organisms. It is bioelectricity that enables a shark to map the ocean floor. It is bio-electromagnetic phenomena that enable migratory birds to travel great distances at the same time each year with the accuracy we have only been able to reproduce with maps and GPS. It is bioelectricity that enables the electric eel to generate large fields of current outside their bodies.

The difference of electricity vs. bioelectricity is in degree, not in kind. Whereas a lightning bolt can exceed temperatures of 54,000 degrees Fahrenheit (30,000 degrees Celsius), that same current runs through the human body, just on a smaller scale.

In fact, the human body runs largely off of [bio] electricity and has organs dedicated to sensing electromagnetic impulses, both inside and outside the human body. The pineal and pituitary glands are both directly tied to the human body's ability to sense and actively experience electromagnetic phenomenon.

The pineal gland is the evolutionary descendant of our ancestors' ability to perceive light. It also regulates the circadian rhythms of the body, biological rhythms that are attuned to the day-night cycle, (Celtoslavica, Electricity and Human Consciousness); these 'rhythms' can be and have been disrupted by electromagnetic fields, both naturally occurring as well as man-made. The pituitary gland controls and influences all other hormonal organs which report back to the pituitary gland(Celtoslavica, Electricity and Human Consciousness); in fact, the pituitary gland is largely responsible for the overall functioning and efficiency of the human nervous system.

The nervous system in human beings is based entirely off of the ability to transmit electric pulses. Every cell within the human body pumps ions (e.g. that which makes up the quantum field), in and out of the cell for energy purposes; this is called the Sodium-Potassium pump, and can be found in all animal life. Said energy, in the biological animal, is called "adenosine triphosphate" (ATP); biologists and biochemist alike have noted that ATP can be neutral, or carry a charge (plus or minus), and is, infact, a charged particle which the cells use for energy. ATP is the final product of the digestive cycle and further exemplifies the human being's connection (and ability) to experience and manipulate the electromagnetic fields that permeate the Universe.

"Bio-magnetism: An Awesome Force in Our Lives," an article published by Reader's Digest (January 1983), highlights some of the [still] cutting edge concepts the scientific community is, and has been, practicing:
"When a patient with a broken leg that is not healing properly comes to Dr. Basset (Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, NY), he is likely to go home with two heavy pads connected by wires to a box that can plug into an electrical wall socket. The patient puts one pad on each side of his broken bone and turns on the device. Coils of wire in the pad induce a pulsing electromagnetic field into his flesh and bone -- a field of energy that somehow commands the bone to heal itself."

As postulated by the scientists interviewed in the article, it makes sense that human beings have the innate ability to sense electromagnetic phenomena:
"We live on a sun-lit planet, and most living things have acquired some means to use the light. We live in a world filled with sounds, and most living things have developed a means to sense vibrations. Since our planet is also a giant magnet, it should not surprise us to discover that we and many other living things have a sensitivity to Earth's magnetic-force field."

As we look from large-scale physics, e.g., the lightning bolt and the sodium-potassium pump, to smaller scale electromagnetic phenomenon, we find ourselves in the realm of quantum mechanics. Light is an electromagnetic phenomenon. Light is both a wave and a particle. In terms of quantum mechanics, electricity and light are the same. The oscillations of the impulses create the divergent effects. Microwaves, radio waves, even the non-lethal weapons of the US Army (such as the Active Denial System jnlwp[dot]com/ads.asp) are based out of electromagnetic fields.

Chi, too, is an electromagnetic phenomenon. Chi is energy; light energy; bio-electromagnetic energy; electricity. The degree of strength in an electromagnetic impulse is the difference between the heart pumping vs. a heart attack. When building chi, it is important to understand, important to know, that the electricity you are both introducing to your body as well as augmenting within your body, can be controlled/manipulated by your mind; without direct and focused intent, the electrical impulses will be raw, hot, and uncomfortable.

In the previously quoted Reader's Digest article, researchers as far back as 1983 were able to accelerate cellular regeneration in adult rats by intruding electromagnetic waves to afflicted parts of their bodies; humans too, have been shown to have enhanced healing at the cellular level when electromagnet fields are introduced. At the same time, it has been well documented that people exposed to high intensity electromagnetic fields, such as those created by power-line generators, are more susceptible to cancerous develops, such as leukemia.

A qualified Chi Power instructor can teach the chi gung practitioner how to harness this energy in a healing fashion, without painful side-effects. The difference being similar to an invigorating spa- massage vs. being seated in an electric chair at half-power; the choice is simple, and is ultimately yours.

Bioflavonoids: Boost Your Brain And Circulatory Health

What are bioflavonoids? No, it's not an annoying mascot for a pizza chain. It's not the latest race of alien beings from a new science fiction series, either. They are actually the natural pigments found in many different fruits and vegetables. Science is discovering that they may have numerous health benefits when it comes to brain function and the overall health of your circulatory system.

Bioflavonoids are most commonly praised for their antioxidant properties. They were first identified in the 1930's by Albert Szent-Gyorgyi, Ph.D., a Nobel laureate. They are thought to prevent the breakdown of vitamin C in the body, and they also boast their own antioxidant capabilities. Over 5000 different bioflavonoids have been identified in nature. They are classified into categories including flavones, anthocyanidins, flavones, flavonols, isoflavones and flavans. Science is still discovering new types and their healing properties every day. The best part about them is that they are all natural and very powerful.

For example, scientists have been promoting the amazing benefits of the antioxidant found in dark chocolate. It is called epicatechin, and it is an excellent bioflavonoid for heart health. Studies show that it helps maintain healthy blood vessels. Antioxidants in dark chocolate are also believed to lower high blood pressure, according to a study published in the Aug. 27, 2003 edition of The Journal of the American Medical Association.

Rutin and quecertin, both found in red grapes, are also linked with a healthier circulatory system. A study conducted at the University of Wisconsin in Madison in 1995 found that "the antioxidant and platelet inhibitory properties of other naturally occurring compounds in the wine the consumption of flavonoid-containing foods and beverages may retard atherogenesis and prevent thrombosis on a daily basis." Translated into common terms, the researchers concluded that bioflavonoid may slow artery and vein degeneration and prevent blood clotting.

The American Heart Association feels that this area of research is very promising. Their website states, "Phytochemicals are chemicals found in plants. Plant sterols, flavonoids and sulfur-containing compounds are three classes of micronutrients found in fruits and vegetables. These compounds may be important in reducing the risk of atherosclerosis, which is the buildup of fatty deposits in artery walls."

As far as healthy brain function is concerned, bioflavonoid is thought to help with microcirculation in small vessels throughout the body. You might recall seeing ginkgo biloba in the news. It has been shown to improve memory with its powerful bioflavonoid in numerous studies. What makes ginkgo especially significant is that its bioflavonoids have a stronger potency than many other bioflavonoids, and it seems to have specific benefits in the capillary beds of the brain.

The National Center for Biotechnology Information recently reported the following on their website: "Flavonoids were shown to activate key enzymes in mitochondrial respiration and to protect neuronal cells by acting as antioxidants, thus breaking the vicious cycle of oxidative stress and tissue damage. Furthermore, recent data indicate a favorable effect of flavonoids on neuro-inflammatory events." In other words, bioflavonoid is thought to help protect your brain cells from degeneration, and recent data shows that they may also reduce swelling.

Researchers are eager to discover all the healing properties bioflavonoids possess. Modern medicine is now faced with an all natural group of chemicals found in plant pigments that may prove to be effective in preserving brain function and promoting cardiovascular health. This is fantastic news for people that prefer natural supplements over expensive prescription pills. Current research shows that these chemicals have significant powers for enhancing overall health. In fact, many researchers advocate including bioflavonoid supplements in your daily health maintenance plan.

The Ataxic Cerebral Palsy Nightmare

Although the occurrence of ataxic cerebral palsy is quite rare (such type is only accounted for about 5 to 10 percent of the entire cerebral palsy cases), keep in mind that it is still cerebral palsy, and it can cause bothering problems not only on your affected child but also to you as well.

The following are some of the facts about ataxic cerebral palsy which you need to be aware of:

• The cerebellum is the part of the human brain that is damaged, causing the ataxic type of cerebral palsy. It is responsible for the coordination and balance of body movements.

• Once damaged, it could result on the following:

o Hypotonia disorder or poor muscle tone;

o Having hard time maintaining balance;

o Depth perception disorders;

o Various tremors; and

o Disability in controlling the motion and range of voluntary movements.

• Children affected with ataxic cerebral palsy may show the following signs:

o Demonstrating unsteady gait;

o Intention tremors while attempting to perform any voluntary movements;

o Clumsiness and difficulty in performing such voluntary movements;

o Writing task is severely affected;

o Depth perception disorder results to coarser movements like reaching for any object;

o Involuntary and rapid eyeball movements; and

o Other related conditions such as visual and hearing disabilities, seizures, and possibly mental retardation.

In most cases, a doctor diagnoses a child for any possible presence of ataxic cerebral palsy through a combination of meticulous physical examination and findings from medical imaging methods like MRI and CT scans. Such findings along with the result of the physical examination are used to evaluate and identify if the brain is developing normally or not. Moreover, if not diagnosed at an early age, it may worse as the affected child ages.

Sad to say, the cure for ataxic cerebral palsy has to be formulated. However, it can be treated by the help of therapies and medical substances. One of the popular treatments used to combat ataxic cerebral palsy is by undergoing a process called chronic cerebella. It starts by placing any stimulation medium such as electrode at the surface of the damaged cerebellum. This is believed to restore the muscle tone and balance.

It is important that you are aware of the signs of ataxic cerebral palsy for it will be your cue if your child is suffering from it, thus you can brought him/her to your physician for further evaluation. Your child's life as well as his/her future is at stake here, so it is imperative that you are not negligent. Be alert and be aware of ataxic cerebral palsy.

MRI Atlas of the Human Cerebellum

MRI Atlas of the Human Cerebellum

$142

The MRI Atlas of the Human Cerebellum constitutes the most complete, detailed work on the human cerebellum to date. This definitive work provides images in the three cardinal planes (sagittal, transverse, and coronal) at closely spaced intervals of 2 millimeters. The images are derived from MRI scans of one individual and from postmortem sections of another. It is the only such atlas set within the universally accepted framework of the Talairach stereotaxic system, derived from standard landmarks in the brain. The book includes a new nomenclature system (labeling system) which is easier to use, aids in understanding the organization of the cerebellum, and is consistent with earlier work on the anatomy of the cerebellum in animals and the development of the human cerebellum in infants. Recent studies have shown that the cerebellum is involved in much more than motor coordination alone: also in higher functions including memory, language, emotion, and attention, as well as sensory discrimination. This atlas facilitates this new era of study of the cerebellum, allowing investigators to identify cerebellar structures with precision. Everyone concerned with the anatomy, function, or dysfunction of the cerebellum should have a copy.

Emotion and the Psychodynamics of the Cerebellum

Emotion and the Psychodynamics of the Cerebellum

$43.51

This is a book about cognition, emotion, memory, and learning. Along the way it examines exactly how implicit memory (knowing how) and explicit memory (knowing that) are connected with each other via the cerebellum. Since emotion is also related to memory, and most likely, one of its organising features, many fields of human endeavour have attempted to clarify its fundamental nature, including its relationship to metaphor, problem-solving, learning, and many other variables. This is an attempt to pull together the various strands relating to emotions, so that clinicians and researchers alike can identify precisely, and ultimately agree, upon what emotion is and how it contributes to the other known activities of mind and brain.

Photographing Your Aquarium - Getting The Effects Right!

Having an aquarium is a wonderful past time, and if you are passionate about photography as well as aquarium fish, you may want to make some nice images of your fish. As with any kind of photography, the two most important elements remain lighting and composition.

Lighting the Aquarium
Try and light the aquarium from the top. You could add reflectors on the outside and under the aquarium to get a variety of results. For example if you would like to accentuate the aqua feel, add a blue reflector right opposite the light source, in this case that would be under the aquarium. You could also use a blue gel on the light source to create blue light. Before you begin shooting, give the fish adequate time to get used to the gear suddenly appearing around the sides of their aquarium world, Fish are more aware of their surroundings than you may imagine. If you do not want to see your fish jumping out of the aquarium in terror, work slowly and calmly, and do not make sudden movements. Give them time to get used to any new feature you want to add. For example, if you've just placed the flash light looking down on the aquarium; give it a few minutes before you add a reflector.

Composition
Getting your aquarium fish into focus as they dart around the container is not very easy, especially if you wish to shoot close ups. For close up shots you may need to use extension rings and tubes between the camera and the lens. Take a few minutes to get used to the sideways motion of the fish before you begin shooting. If the fish are moving sideways, you can minimize the depth of field since they are more or less equally far from the lens when moving from this end to that. You could even fix the camera on a tripod for a smooth left-right-left motion. As you pan the tripod, fire the shutter while still in the slow movement. This can create some exciting effects, and minimize the blur on the fish. If the fish are moving towards you on the other hand, you would want to quickly change to maximum possible depth of field, since the distance between you and them is on the decrease.

Exposure
You will not have time to calculate exposure every time you change the depth of filed. It is a good idea to set the camera on aperture priority mode if you have the feature, and let the camera worry about the changes in shutter speed as you change the aperture.

Safety
When working with lighting equipment, make absolutely sure that the flash head is secure on the stand. If it comes off the stand and falls into the aquarium, the electricity would immediately kill the fish.

Six Ways to Combat the Media's Sexualization of Your Daughter

It's a common gripe among parents that our children are growing up too soon. Moms and Dads often have a love-hate relationship with much of the media when it comes to their children--especially when it comes to their daughters. There's the obvious sexualization of women and girls in music videos, magazines, internet games and advertisements, but what the more subtle messages sent by old standbys like stories of helpless princesses?

The "idyllic" female, fully equipped with impossibly thin waist, dressed in frills, pink, or even sexy costumes and of course, waiting for her prince, is enough to make even old favorites get on our nerves. We used to love them as children, but as parents, we often have a new perspective.

Parents are citing incidents when their daughters actually emulate these 2-dimensional characters-- and not in good ways. One parent told me of her frustration:

"For a while when she would put on a nightgown with a stretchy neck, she'd pull it off one shoulder and walk around with her head tilted towards that shoulder. And look right at us while batting her eyelashes. I would promptly ask her to:

--"Cover your shoulder, girls don't dress like that."

--"So and so Princess does."

--"You're not So and so Princess."

It can be infuriating to raise girls when media keeps telling them that they need to look a certain way in order to get attention. The princess enterprise isn't going anywhere, and it's certainly something that many parents must deal with everyday.

Fed up? Here's some things you can do:

- Ask her about them: What does she say that she liked about the princesses? You may be surprised. There are always things we like and dislike about friends and other people in our lives' but we don't shut them out even if we don't agree with them. It may be that what she likes about them could be something that like about them too.

- Go Positive: Take a character-based approach and build from the positive side. Find something that you like about those princesses' do they have determination and go after something they really want? Do they have goals and dreams? Do they have nice singing voices? Do they show that they're good friends to their friends? Are they kind? Grateful? Giving? Start focusing on the positive. Praise what you like.

- Cite the Negative: You can also be very straightforward about what you don't like about them so that your daughter is clear about your values. In the spirit of teaching honesty and character to your daughter, be clear yet age appropriate. Is it their style of dress? Their choices? Their "pinkness?" We want our daughters to get out of the habit of thinking that girls can only look, act, and be one way. Keep it simple but let them know what bothers you about what you're seeing.

- Model What You Want to See: Your example is stronger than any 2-dimensional character could ever be. Show your daughters what you think is beautiful in a womansuch as, determination, strength of character, and open-mind and respect for others.

- Expose Her to Fabulous 3-D Role Models: Have some great friends or local heroes that really show your daughter what a girl can become? Allow your daughter to have "tea" or lunch with them. The more we can expose our girls to powerful, positive women and teens, the more they will see that reality is much better than fantasy.

- Get Her Into A Positive Activity: Challenge the stereotypes and ensure that your daughter is involved in activities that isn't all pink and frills. Choose sports that make her feel powerful. Perhaps a martial arts, power tumbling or modern dance class would bring out a different side of her. Ensure that the program teaches both physical and character development in order to make sure that she learns to thrive from the inside out.

If she knows what you like and what you don't like, is challenging the stereotypes, and is exposed to powerful, positive women, you might be surprised the next time you here her talk about those princesses. She may just say something like "I like that she's good to her friends but she doesn't always make the best choices."

Description

As explained by Aaron Shelby, “women have always been seen as objects, but black women, in particular, have always been subjected to unjust treatment.” For centuries racist and/or sexist people controlled what Black females in Africa and America thought about themselves via the sexualization of the Black female image, and consequently also controlled what they did about and allowed to be done to themselves...

Dusting the Virgin Mary. Crashing a lesbian drumming circle. Offending Mormon missionaries. It's all in a day's work for Kim Ficera. In this corrosive, hilarious, and ultimately humanistic collection of essays and performance pieces, the larger-than-life humorist takes on such disparate topics as why size matters to God, lesbian break-up parties, being called an "older woman," and embracing the C-word. (No, it's not cous-cous.) It's a wild, strange trip through a uniquely American, pop culture wonderland where cloning is one step away from a November sweeps event and fake breasts threaten to overtake Vegas in Twilight Zone fashion. Like a female David Sedaris - but definitely not like a virgin - Kim Ficera is the woman our mothers warned us about...and more dangerously fun than they could have possibly imagined.

These shows made me sad, reminding me of all my people have lost due to forced or voluntary assimilation into white society. Our language, our traditions, our history, our stories, our identity, they have all been diminished. --A study participantAccording to an early 1990s study, 95 percent of what college students know about Native Americans was acquired through the media, leading to widespread misunderstandings of First Nations peoples. Sierra Adare contends that negative Indian stereotypes do physical, mental, emotional, and financial harm to First Nations individuals. At its core, this book is a social study whose purpose is to explore the responses of First Nations peoples to representative Indian stereotypes portrayed within the TV science fiction genre. Participants in Adare's study viewed episodes from My Favorite Martian, Star Trek, Star Trek: Voyager, Quantum Leap, The Adventures of Superman, and Star Trek: The Next Generation. Reactions by viewers range from optimism to a deep-rooted sadness. The strongest responses came after viewing a Superman episode's depiction of an evil medicine man who uses a ceremonial pipe to kill a warrior. The significance of First Nations peoples' responses and reactions are both surprising and profound. After publication of Indian Stereotypes in TV Science Fiction, ignorance can no longer be used as an excuse for Hollywood's irresponsible depiction of First Nations peoples' culture, traditions, elders, religious beliefs, and sacred objects.
