Do You Need Brain Function Supplements?

Brain function supplements as the name suggest are the supplements containing essential nutrients required for the brain to function normally. In the absence of these indispensable nutrients, brain can behave abnormally resulting in conditions like Autism, Bipolar disorder, memory loss, lack of concentration, anxiety and depression, etc.

The Brain Fitness Solution

Recently, there have been a lot of new stories about the plasticity of our brains. All that really means is that we have the ability to keep improving our intelligence, our memory and our mental clarity for as long as we live.

That was a subject of some debate, for many years. You would hear sayings like, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks.” Well, maybe not a dog, but higher thinking mammals, such as we humans, can continue to learn throughout our lives.

We owe a debt of gratitude to physicians and neuropsychologists who work with people who have injured their brains in some manner. Stroke victims, for example, have to “re-learn” many things. We continue to learn exactly how our brains work, because of these learned professionals.

Now, the brain fitness program is a documentary that aired on PBS in December, 2007. It has recently been released on DVD. But, don’t expect too much from it. It is primarily an interesting overview of the latest research.

As with any other health subject, there are no “miracles” here. To increase or protect your mental clarity takes work. There is no single exercise that will work for everyone. There are actually a number of different steps that should be included.

You should actually design the brain fitness program that is right for you. It should include physical exercises, because physical activity increases the number of new neurons that our brains create.

It should include mental exercise, because that determines how those neurons will be used and how long they will survive. Your programs should also include stress management. A brain under stress produces less new neurons and their lifespan is shorter.

All of this has been confirmed with clinical research and laboratory studies. We have the ability to “see” the synapses firing or “misfiring”, in the case of someone with a mental illness. We can tell which lobe is being accessed and have learned how to stimulate the different areas of our brains.

Everyone has different needs. For example, if you want to improve your memory, the brain fitness program that you choose should focus on that subject.

If the claims made by a game or software program are vague and general, choose something else. There are plenty of programs on the market. Even Nintendo makes a video game to stimulate the brain.

The experts recommend that video games and computer based learning programs are more effective than those on paper, like Sudoku and crosswords. Those kinds of exercises do not provide increasingly difficult challenges.

Anything that you do can improve your mental clarity. Some things just seem to be more effective than others. Mind-fit, for example, is a software program that combines a personalized training regimen with a dozen new skills to learn and a regular assessment of your progress.

Computer Games for Brain Fitness

Just came across some interesting research from Arthur Kramer at the University of Illinois, which buttresses the already steady stream of information about how brain fitness can be improved.

This study indicates that 60 and 70 year old folks can improve some brain or cognitive skills by playing a strategic video game.

From the Science Digest article about the study,

"A desire to rule the world may be a good thing if you're over 60 and worried about losing your mental faculties. A new study found that adults in their 60s and 70s can improve a number of cognitive functions by playing a strategic video game that rewards nation-building and territorial expansion."

According to the article, "this is the first such study of older adults, and it is the first to find such pronounced effects on cognitive skills not directly related to the skills learned in the video game, said University of Illinois psychology professor Arthur Kramer, an author on the study."

"Decades of laboratory studies designed to improve specific cognitive skills, such as short-term memory, have found again and again that trainees improve almost exclusively on the tasks they perform in the lab - and only under laboratory conditions, Kramer said."

This is important for those of us with 60 year old brains who are interested is sustaining our viability, especially if you are a parent, like me, of a 10 and 4 year old brain. I want my training to generalize to the rest of my life. When I lift weights, the strength that results is very useful in lawn mowing and parenting realms. It makes it possible for me to wrestle with my kids, for example, and even their friends. I can feel the strength when I am tasked with that chore, which overwhelms my younger wife. I want my brain fitness to translate to my parenting and counseling practice in the same way. I also like to know what Dr. I would like to know what Dr. Kramer's opinion of the fluid intelligence training provided by the dual n back task is in regards to executive intelligence.

"When you train somebody on a task they tend to improve in that task, whatever it is, but it usually doesn't transfer much beyond that skill or beyond the particular situation in which they learned it," he said. "And there are virtually no studies that examine whether there's any transfer outside the lab to things people care about."

This has been a concern for me with some of the commercial programs available to consumers. Other programs have indicated that the training in the exercise translates to other activities, and some have said there is limited or no transfer to activities not specifically in the game. Kramer is saying. I would be very curious to know what games the researchers tried and discarded and why.

"Kramer and his colleagues wanted to know whether a more integrated training approach could go beyond the training environment to enhance the cognitive skills used in every day life. Specifically, the researchers wondered whether interactive video games might benefit those cognitive functions that decline most with age."

"Older people tend to fare less well on things that are called executive control processes," Kramer said. "These include things like scheduling, planning, working memory, multitasking and dealing with ambiguity."

So it is old age and not ADD? Will my wife believe that? She is already sceptical].

The evidence in this study indicates that there was improvement.

"In medical terminology, these would be dose-response effects," Kramer said. "The more drug - or in this case the more training on the video game - the more benefit."

The findings are meaningful, Basak said, because they show that multi-dimensional training can affect many individual components of cognitive function.

"The fact that you're training people in a molecule and finding transfer to atoms I think is very impressive," she said.

"This is one mode in which older people can stay mentally fit, cognitively fit," Kramer said. "I'm not suggesting, however, that it's the only thing they should do."

Other activities, in particular socializing, exercising and eating well, are also important to maintaining healthy cognitive function in later years, he said.

5 No-fail Strategies for Effective Goal Setting

It does not matter what goals you set and what goals you want to achieve. The main question here is how to set an effective goal that will drive you into taking action. You should know that the main reason most people fail to achieve their goals is because they are not taking enough action or they simply procrastinate. And why does this happen? It is because the goals that they have set are not effective. That is why you need to learn about effective goal setting.

Before you start to set your goal, there is one thing that you must be clear of. It is the reason for you to achieve your goals. You must know why you want to achieve your goals so much in your life. If your reason is not strong enough, you will never put in 100 percent commitment into taking action and hence you will never achieve it. So make sure that you are cleared with what you want in your life before going on.

Now, you can set all kinds of goals, you can set your goals as you want to be a multi-millionaire, you can even set your goal as that you want to be the president. You can achieve any goals you want in your life, but you must make use of these 5 no-fail strategies for effective goal setting. They are…

1. Your goals must be as specific as possible.

The first thing is of course your goals must be specific. The more specific the better, this is because it will be easier for your mind to come out with strategies and steps to achieve them. If you are not specific, it is hard for you to focus in your goals. For example, if your goal is to make $1,000,000 in just 2 years, do you know that there are tons of strategies you can use to achieve this goal? You can invest in stock market; build your own business, through network marketing and more. So be as specific as possible, this is the most basic step for effective goal setting.

2. Set a deadline for each of your goals.

Second, your goals must have a deadline. A goal without a deadline is not a goal, it is a dream. If you say that you want to be a multi-millionaire, when is it that you are going to achieve that goal? Is it 3 years from now? Is it 10 years from now or is it 20 years from now? A lot of people set goals, but they never set a deadline for their goals, and that is why they did not achieve their goals, simply because they don’t know when they are going to achieve them. Remember, put a deadline every of your goals, if your goals don’t have any deadline, it is not an effective goal setting strategies anymore.

3. Your goals must be achievable.

This is a more to practical step. What kind of goals do you set? If you set a goal like you want to earn $100,000, how are you going to achieve it? Make $100,000 is not something that can be achievable. What I mean here is that, you must include your strategies and plans of how you are going to achieve your goals. To conquer the Chinese market is not something achievable. However, to sponsor 3 Chinese everyday in your business will eventually bring you to your goal, which is to conquer the Chinese market. It is the small step that will bring you to your goals. Therefore, always break down your goals into achievable small steps.

4. Develop momentum by taking at least 3 action steps after setting your goals.

An effective goal setting must include developing momentum towards your goals. A lot of people do not know about this, and a lot of them will not do this even if they knew. You have to create the momentum that keeps you going throughout the whole process until the day you achieve your goals. For instance, if your goal is to make $100,000, then you can take action steps like paying deposit for any wealth courses or seminars and you can buy any wealth books to digest as well. By doing so, you are creating the momentum to keep you going. You need to do this every week, and the best will be everyday. Once your momentum is up, nothing can ever stop you. This is how effect goal setting can help you achieve anything you want in your life.

5. Write down your goals and stick it on the wall where you can see it often.

This is an old school strategy. Write down your goals and stick it on the wall where you can see it often. I believe that you know about this strategy, just that you don’t dare to do it. Many people seem like embarrass to tell everyone about their goals. In fact, it is a great step to tell everyone about what you want to achieve in your life. This is because by doing so, you are putting yourself on the line and you will never forget your goals. The more you are reminded of your goals, the more action you are going to take, and thus, the easier you can achieve your goals. So stick your goals on the wall, talk about them all the time and live with them.
